The first thing to try is hitting Ctrl/Alt/+ (That's the + all the way
on the right side, in the numeric keypad area). This advances through
all possible screen resolutions. If this doesn't do anything after a few
tries at that key sequence (Give the monitor a few seconds to respond
to the change) then you need to try ctrl/alt/F3, which should give you
a "glass TTY" text screen. You should be able to log in, and then you
can see if X11 is running with ps xa. If you see a bunch of lines that
start with kdeinit: <something> then it is probably up. There should also
be a line that says /bin/sh /usr/X11R6/bin/startx which is the original
process that started the X windows screen. To make sure you see all the
lines,
use ps xa | more, and you can page through the list of processes.

If none of these things show up, X11 probably died for some reason,
like the card it expected was not what was in the machine. You can look
in /var/log/XFree86.0.log to see what is going on when X starts up,
and what screen resolutions it tried.
