Hi Dave,
Well, I don't currently need any axe handles, so that's out. So far,
the columns I've made for my steam engines have been circular in cross
section. Tapered, and sometimes with flutes, and even "fish belly", but
no ovals. I'd be more included to use a rotary table, and an endmill to
do the non circular cross sections. Although that would be slow.
After thinking a little, I realized that rotary table could be used to
make engine cams in this manner. Not a voice coil, spindle connection,
but it is something I will be doing, probably on my next engine.
