You will want a line reactor on the input side of your inverter because if
you don't the harmonics from the switching will be transmitted down the
local power line and result in you getting crap from the local town and
utilities. All of the VFD or VSD as you call it drives have this problem to
some extent. You will also note that any AM radio will pick up this noise
and therefore upset people who use the AM band. You can further reduce this
problem by making sure the machine and the panel box are grounded. Lastly
you can change the carrier frequency to a lower one.
I hope that helps

Hi all,
I'm looking for a low cost VSD for a 3/4 HP 3ph motor for use on my 9"
lathe.
AutomationDirect has a 1hp unit for under $200 but 'highly recomends' a
Line Reactor. The Line Reactor is about the same price as the VSD.
My questions are.
Is a Line Reactor a good feature or not needed in a home shop. We have
a couple computers in the house and obviously the PC as a controller on
the CNC stuff.
Is a line reactor something that is easily obtained from a junk yard ?
I walked past one the other day, but it was huge, at least a 18inches
high.
