I agree with this opinion. That's the reason( among others), that we
started using DeskCNC over 2 1/2 years ago. In the present form (2nd
generation), it runs 125,000 dedicated hardware steps per second. The
serial port interface can process up to 300 motion blocks( lines or
arcs ) per second, and has a 200 block downstream buffer.

The DeskCNC hardware, however is not what would normally be thought of
as dumb dedicated hardware, as it has interactive i/o, 4 axes of step
and direction, pwm spindle speed, probing, and threading built in. It
is also flash reprogrammable.

There is also a Windows API available for developing custom interfaces.
