John, the Deskncrt is a DOS G-code program that got it's
idea and some source code from EMC(nist). The Indexer LPT
software is promoted by Hoyt McKagen, who you have
seen on RCM. Drop him a line, he will surely give you more
info.

Thanks to Dan and Bob for the replies:
First Dan,
I wasn't actually looking to move anything with the hard drive stepper just
to run a program through and watch the movement of the motor shaft in fresh
air whilst trying out different software and options.
Does anyone know what the difference is between DeskNC and DeskNCrt ?
Second Bob:
I have looked at Ability but from what I have seen so far it looks as if
you need to write a special program or front end as from their web page it
doesn't look as if it will accept G code. As I said in my first post it
must accept G code and be in metric.
Can anyone confirm or deny Ability's use of G codes ?
Finally is it possible to use a hard drive JUST for testing the step and
direction output from the parallel port ?
