It's just a reference used by the industry. It means a bearing of a
particular size, I don't think the actual number means anything.

You'll also see 608ZZ, the ZZ (or Z) means the bearing isn't sealed, you
can removed the shields and clean the bearing. Sheilds are usually metal,
& held on by circlips.
