A lot of retrofit builders use the air springs as a counter balance for both
the Z axis quill to keep the backlash out and some use two of them on the
knee to take up some of the load and to prevent dropping of the knee if they
use a ballscrew. Myself, I retofitted my enco 8X36 knee using the existing
acme leadscrew driven by right angle gears and one of my 600 oz in servo
motors and a 2.5/1 ratio timing belt pulley drive. I don't run it that fast
but it runs with no heat probl;ems but I am running it a bit on the slow
side.
