Hi Donn,

Networking Win 98 with Linux is no problem - I have three computers
networked in my house at present (it varies!). The 'main' machine is running
Win'98, another is running RedHat 5.2 and Win'95 dual booting (i.e. only one
or the other at any one time but all the files are available to either
operating system - this is also the machine I have EMC working on at
present) and the third is running Mandrake 7 Linux. I am currently writing
this on the Mandrake machine which is connected to the 'net via the modem in
the Windoze98 box. Setting up the Firewall (WinProxy - free for a single
connection) and this internet connection was the only really awkward part of
the setup so far but I have spent some time trying to sort out putting EMC
on the Mandrake box with no success - I haven't had much time to play with
this since others have made theirs work so I think I just need to play
'catch-up' now.
Basically all that is required to network the machines is to acquire the
right number of network cards - mine all came from boot sales at about 1UKP
each, some cabling and, optionally, a hub. The two main methods of
connecting the computers is by either using co-ax cable card-to-card in a
'daisy chain' or with a 'hub' (which is the way I do it) where all the
computers are connected to this little box using lighter 6-core cable. In
either case, you instantly get the ability to transfer files of any size
between one computer and another without having to resort to floppy disks,
CDs or whatever. There are good instructions available on how to do the
setups both for windoze and in the linux 'HOWTOs'. I also received very
useful advice both from members of this list and from the local Linux User
group (most have email lists). HTH

Is my impression correct that I can network my
