Have you looked at the DSP chips from www.microchip.com; dsPIC30F2010 it's a
really great with PID PWM control;

price at about $3.50 and at 30 MIPs it doesn't suck. At that rate you could
calculate and apply PID at 50ns or so.

As for the patent issue, there are still a lot of them being issued for PID and
CLCC motor control. Couple of patents I just looked at could cover your use as
one of there embodiments. Just be careful in this arena, a lot of powerful
players out there (NI, Parker, AB, etc.). Hiding your implementation in an
embedded controller is no safety net; it's called an injunction followed by
discovery.
