Well, on the 1 KVA used for discussion, the transformer is rated for 9 A
with the
windings in parallel. But, with it in the center-tapped arrangement,
only one half
of the winding conducts at a time, for each half cycle. So, that is
nearly the same
heating potential on the wire. Also, remember these transformers
usually have a
pretty large safety factor to handle momentary current surges as motors and
power supplies start up.

It should work OK, but it is just a bit close. An overvoltage dump
system might
be a good idea.
