Doug,
It really depends on how the front end of your drive is designed. Most of
the VFD's I have dealt with have "dumb" front ends that convert the incoming
AC to DC via a 3 phase rectifier. As long as in input current or voltage
never exceeds what this rectifier can handle, everything works fine. This
means you can generally feed them with single phase, as long as things are
derated so you don't exceed input current capability or DC buss ripple
maximum. Bottom line, although I have not done it, I don't see any reason
why there should be any problem running the drive off the converter. One
thing you have to be sure of is that the drive is next to the motor and that
you don't try to do any live switching between the drive and the motor.

rated at 5hp, as is the drive. This particular drive will not accept single
phase input, so I have to have a three phase source for testing of the
system. My three phase comes from a rotary converter.

been told that using any type of phase converter to drive a VFD is not a
good idea. My reason for questioning this advice is that the individual did
not know much about electricity in general.

safe if I ran a motor in the background to act as a regulator?
