Yes, if you used a 440 V motor, too, your logic would be correct. But
ONLY in
that case.

I managed to get a REALLY NICE Magnetek VFD on eBay, and it is working
very nicely. But, I really wouldn't want to be running 1 HP and larger
motors on
120 V input.
