Hi John,
I cannot disagree with the prices you quote if you are buying them off-the-shelf.
If you consider that it is possible to use a brushed DC motor from any source and either fit an encoder taken from the $4.25 motors sold by Electronics' Goldmine. I an using motors taken from a Philips washing machine which cost me nothing and are powerful enough to drive the knee on a Bridgeport.
On the other hand it is difficult to find a substitute for steppers at a good price in the 800 in oz range.
So I stand by what I wrote below.
Regards,
Terry
I beg to differ with this comment. I called Pittman motors on Thursday to
get prices for the 14204S006 motors called out in Jeff Kerr's article in
Nuts & Volts and was quoted $185.29 each for them. That is roughly $560.00
worth of motors to go on a Sherline 5400 mill, not to mention $190.00 each
for the drivers for them. Servos are wonderful but I don't think I will be
going that route for my shop any time in the near future.
John
5. Why is everyone interested in Servos and by passing steppers. The
present mill retrofit that I am using uses steppers and have had no
problem
programming or running "G" code on it. The speed is appropiate and why
is
every one wanting speed.
Steppers cost, their drivers are cheap. Servos are cheap, their drivers
cost. Servos run smoother. The quest for greater speed is something that I
don't follow. If I get 60ipm on my Bridgeport type machine I'll be happy, I
only cut real metal.
Regards,
Terry
