Laptop computers have more than a normal share of woes with Linux. To
get such tight packaging the companies build all manner of integraed
functions, and until quite recently were not very friendly toward Linux.
I cannot say specifically about the ThinkPad, but IBM recently announced
some kind of extra laptop support for Linux. It might be worth browsing
their web site.

This is not to discourage you, but Laptop Linux is still harder than
Desktop Linux.
