You can flare the end and achieve somewhat of a lower loss.
but, as a simple home-brew, the direct plunge is not the optimum.
Jon's rotating needle with an angled tip can to tiny holes and tubing
with a flare of buldge or added end can speed up the small R/C home-
brew units.
As you know, the R/C has to build the voltage and works off the
capacitors time constant. the electrlyte adds a very measurable
resistance to the process and offers a path for the power to flow
outside of the desired pulse. this extends the time of the charging
as well as saps some of the dischage power.
High pressure flushing would work, but for water, requires a large
volume of really clean water.
alas, the home-brew works, but is nowhere near the capabilities of a
cheap proifessional machine.
If you really need an EDM for lots of work, considder E-Bay and get
something powerful.
