If we are talking about using them with the Geckodrive servo drivers your
resolution would be .000125". The drive reads the encoders in 4X mode so you
get 1600 counts per revolution not 400. So, you will have 8,000 counts per
inch (400 x 4 = 1600/revolution x 5 turns per inch).

I don't think you need to be afraid of backlash from a belt drive. That is
one of the reasons they are used is for a zero backlash connection. There
are advantages to a belt drive in that it will give you more torque in
addition to increasing your resolution.

I have been meaning to ask Mariss if it is possible to have a setting on the
drives to allow you to choose between 1X, 2X, and 4X quadriture mode. That
would allow a much greater range of encoders.
