I am only using the Goldmine motors for testing as they were handy because
they had the encoders already mounted. While they have a respectable amount
of torque I would guess that it is in the 20 in/oz range, certainly not
enough to drive much of a machine. I am planning on using some servo much
bigger servo motors on my machine and use the little Goldmine motors just
for the encoders. I haven't decided if I want to make up new bearing mounts
for the encoders or just use them as they sit and accept they are a little
longer than necessary. I have a variety of motors. I got 4 motors that are
4" diameter x 5" long from an old reel style computer tape drive and I have
2 that are 4" diameter x 6" from e-bay.

It is hard to say what type of speed you will be able to get from your
computer. It depends upon what software you are running. Based upon your
being able to get 100 ipm currently using 1/2 step stepper (I am assuming
they are 200 step/rev so it requires 400 pulses to get 1 revolution) you
will only get 25 ipm with 400 count encoders as it will take 1600
pulses/rev. Of course, your system may be capable of more than the 100 ipm
you are seeing now and it may be the steppers that are limiting you.
