Hello Dave,
For a short wire length, like 6 feet, I would skip the math and use the
same gauge wire as the stepper leads.
For something long, like a hundred feet, I would do the math to find out
where my losses are.
I like to keep wire resistance less than 1% load resistance so that I
can pretty much ignore wire losses. So for a 1 ohm motor coil I would
want my wire to be less than 0.01 ohms. Wire catalogs often list wire
resistance as ohms per foot, or more often as ohms per 1000 feet. Pick a
wire guage, determine its resistance per foot, multiply by the length in
feet. Is this resistance very small compared to the load resistance?
