Worm gears CAN have lots of backlash, but generally don't. If you
use an "antibacklash" type gear for the worm to mesh with, it will
have zero. If you lap them together, the resulting gear set can have
a fraction of an arcsecond of backlash. It is all in how you set it
up. Look at a good rotary table for what this will have for specifications.
Got a computer to junk? That will have a power supply in it which
will work, wall warts will even work.
4 count quadrature encoding is more tricky. I'd put something in the
files section, but the functionality is currently turned off for me,
I have 2 JPEGS of how this works.
