I guess you can't argue with what works.
I think ATF has all kinds of detergents and various stuff for
corrosion resistance, which in the long run maybe just as important as
the lubrication it provides.
There is not much torque on this spindle when cutting wood, so the
film of oil is enough. With a mill you might need an oil with more
viscosity. ATF seems to work quite well to keep tools from rusting
for the reasons posted above. As far as oil getting into your lungs,
we have a 4" vacuum line pulling the chips away, and I am sure what
little oil that comes out goes with the chips.
