The Boss machines never had AC servos. The Boss 6 was stepper
motors. I took them off and got rid of them. I used some low RPM,
high torque (8 pole) AC servos from Glentek. The motors ran about
$580 each with 2500 line encoders. They are a little less than 1 HP.
The motors are actually metric (125 mm, I think). I made adapter
plates from steel to mount them on the NEMA 42 mounting holes of the
machine. I also had to enlarge all the pulley bores to fit the
shafts. I used Allen Bradley 1398 drives from eBay. They were pretty
cheap and work well. I would say I put about $2500 into retrofit
parts for the 3 axis, including cables, new contactors, DIN rail,
knobs, switches, etc. This does not include the PC to run it.
