I retrofitted my Boss5 a while back After a protracted and expensive
battle trying to get the original steppers to work I bit the bullet and
fitted DC servos. It now works brilliantly.

The motors are cheap treadmill motors from www.surpluscenter.com with
encoders fitted. They work remarkably well. I have a lathe is fitted
with proper DC servos and to be honest I can't say they perform any
better than the treadmill motors, apart from the fact they have more
torque. The only disadvantage with treadmill motors is that you have to
gear them down about 4:1 instead of the original 1:1 or 2:1.
