John, Steve,
Agree with both. The majority of new users don't know all that. They're opting for flashing banners and animated avatars. To a new enthusiast, coming to a Yahoo forum where nothing is in context, it's just a bunch of information. I don't know how many posts I've seen from 2 or 3 month old users. "Whats a G-rex?". We understand it all, to them often it's just overwhelming confusion.
I still use these forums and like them much better. Every post gets directly emailed and I read the ones of interest and disregard the others. They all go into the archive which has about 70,000 posts now. I do YahooPlus that allows searches etc. Works most of the time. Really great for researching an issue.
John, you could probably sell copies of those CD's. Or better yet, maybe hook up with John P and spend a few months compiling info into a book. Lots of great info, less my rants of course :) I'd buy a copy. They would be invaluble to the home shop builder (on-topic plug :)

Ron,
CNC Zone is a total mess because it has too may forums.
How do you search for say a Mach problem ? There are about 4 or 5
fprums for Mach, it's also mentioned on Desktop mills, Sylil mills,
Gecko drives and so on because people won't post to the correct forum.
The key players hardly use it so how can you get an anwer you can trust ?
I read the Yahoo groups with a program called PG Offline.
This enables me to download all the new posts from the 10 or so groups
I read whilst i make my morning coffee.
When I get back these are then on my computer and not reliant on a net
connection.
I can read these just like email, skim though and ignore what don't
interest me and reply to the ones that do.
I now have many groups like CCED, Mach3, DIY-CNC, Gecko stored on my
hard drive and backed up on CD going back to post #1
You can search by name, subject or keyword, even in the post body and
you can even mark messages as favorites to narrow any searches.
Well worth a look.
