I don't normally post here, but I have to chime in.

You don't really *have* to drill hard materials with diamond. You can
use a ram edm with a small electrode too. There are even plans to make
a small table top model that I built to burn stuff into hard materials.

Look up "edm book" on ebay. You should be able to find one that has
plans to build a pretty decent homebrew machine.
