unipolar stepper and 5804

We have some salvaged unipolar (5 wire) steppers that we’ve made move with
David Benson’s 4 SPST, 4 diode manual unipolar tester. His next step was to
build a board with either a PIC16C711 or PIC1F84 supplying phase, direction
and full or ½ step info plus the step input (3 microsecond minimum timing)
to a UCN5804 translator/driver. We thought we had access to a PIC
programmer that would program the 84, but alas we do not. SO I’m wondering
if we can just have switches to the phase (pin 9), ½ step (pin 10) and
direction (pin 14) to control those items and dump a square wave from like a
555 to “step” (pin 11) to get the 5804 to “Control” the stepper.
