I think Dave's intent is to use the acme threaded rod as a winding drum using the threads as the guide groove. You would pick a cable diameter small enough to bottom out in the thread so you don't have to worry about how tightly the cable would wedge between the sloped walls of the thread.

I must be missing something here. The diameter of the screw would have some
effect on the travel per revolution of the screw but the distance traveled
would be controlled by the pitch of the thread.[...]
