Why? I think it would work over whatever amount of travel you need, until the weight of the cable itself became a problem.
Are you thinking that the cable would work it's way from one end of the acme rod to the other? I don't think it would. I think it would stay in the center.

I am thinking that you would have to go through some extreme gyrations to
get this to work over more than a foot or two of spindle travel.
You can get Acme Threaded rod in large diameters but imagine the inertia of
a 15" by 2' bar of metal.

the motor.
