High quality winches use a moving, auto reversing guide a bit like the quick
action screwdrivers that are getting hard to find.
A threaded bar with the same pitch as the wire and geared 1 to 1 (or half the
wire dia and 2 to 1) would save having to cut threads in the pipe. A shorter,
larger diameter pipe could then be used for better rigidity.
The guide wouldn't need to be anything special, a bit of plywood and a couple
of rollers with strips of plastic to run on the wire already on the pipe
would do.
A couple of timing belts is starting to seem very straightforward :) The wire
option is worth going with though, a lot of good quality equipment uses it,
the parts are cheap and backlash is none existent.
If you where planing on using steppers then chain, belt or wire is a much
better option, most folks who try threads are disappointed with the speed
(guess what I just tried..) unless they put a few extra zeroes on the end of
the price (its cnc, it can run all night if it need to :) )
cheers
