Well, this discussion was about a plasma machine, not a mill or
router, so there are no machining loads. But, still, if the
axis that traverses the gantry is at one end, then there may be
a strong imbalance of weight on the gantry, and when the whole
gantry is moved from one end to the other, the imbalanced mass
may cause most of the driving force to be needed at one end of
the gantry. This requires pretty fair acceleration to be a
concern, though.
