Most of the rolled and ground ballscrew have a 70 Rc case about 80 thou deep, lathe jaws aren't going to scratch it or deform it. Where the jaws hold it, nothing travels anyway.
Strip the case with carbide tooling, then you can do all the pretty stuff with high speed steel if need be. I've never seen ballscrew that was heat-treated all the way through. It could snap and be impossible to machine if they were. The cores are a little tougher than cold roll 1018, but very manageable. For stripping the case, find a heavy lathe and some ear plugs.
