Re: Vacuum pump for vacuum chuck?

If you are machining permeable material like MDF or wood, make sure to put a filter inline before the pump. This can be as simple as a water filter from Walmart plumbed for air.

The dual diaphragm pumps work well for chucks. A refrigerator pump can pump to a good vacuum, but the?CFM is usually quite low. I've made and assisted on a few of these for wood turning. Shop vacs don't really have enough "suck" unless you area of the chuck is fairly large. Pay attention to the square inches you will be holding. Small parts need a better vacuum than large ones to get enough holding power.
