Re: Servo as a Sherline spindle motor ?

Hi Alan,
You may wish to ask this on the Mach forum. As I recall, using the PP is a
stable process for spindle index (1 pulse per rev) up to either 3K or 5K
rpm. I'm setting up my lathe using a SmoothStepper, which has a much higher
capability. The only potential downside is that the SS is technically still
in development. This is not an issue for me but may be for some folks, as
it doesn't yet have complete duplication of PP functionality.

Thanks,
Andrey Lipavsky

Thanks for the note; in fact, you bring good news ! It means the motor
I've picked is an appropriate size.

You see, I have a pretty old Sherline with the variable speed _AC_ motor
right out of a small sewing machine, the speed control no more
sophisticated than a cheap light dimmer.

I'm quite sure what I'm planning will be an upgrade.

I'm curious about your statement about tradeoffs re: interface device. I
was planning on just using the parallel port. Am I missing something ?
