Depending on the model, they may need an external cooling blower. If
yours didn't have an integral blower, that's why it smoked.

My only experience was with one off eBay, it was a MONSTER, and I ended
up selling it at a loss on eBay later. No way could it be fit onto my
Bridgeport, as I had intended. The Precise spindle is a LOT smaller and
when I get around to making a 2-phase converter for it, I will make an
adaptor to bolt it to the side of my Bridgeport quill.
