It depends a lot on the sophistication of the probe, use, and machine you
are running it on, Roland.

My Renishaw MP1s that I use on my mill needs to have the concentricity
adjusted which is a pain. So for finding an edge or center of a hole I
converted a $20 electronic edgefinder which works just as well, always
concentric (ball tip) and it easily replacable in the event of a crash.

That way I'm not risking the Renishaw, which is useful for when I need Z
overtravel.

Don't worry about breaking the probe, you can change tips with no drama. DO
be aware that some probes like the DEA and the MP1s use odd stylus threads.
you might have to buy a couple of adaptors if your stylii and probe are
different, Q-Mark sells these.
