Self replication and rigidity are not mutually exclusive... Watch this
space for my new printer design announcement coming in the next 72
hours or so. :-)

I agree that some people take the self-replication thing a bit too
seriously, but the self-replication goal is the only thing that has
allowed the reprap to make the progress that it has over the last 5
years. Not only does self-replication lowers the bar to entry by
lowering the cost, it also makes it trivial to try new ideas, which is
what has let us push the bar so far in our print quality.

I do agree that there is a huge hang up on the threaded rod thing.
They work and they are cheap, but they don't work all /that/ well, and
they are not that much cheaper than the alternatives. Anyway, that
will be changing in the next few days.
