need torque formula help

Hi all,
looking for the formula, not the answer so much.
if you have a hammer to pull a nail, the claw is, say, 1 inch from the nail.
if you use a crowbar, the claw is 3 inches.
The handle is 1 foot in both cases.
What I am trying to determine is the pulling action at the nail.
what has me stumped is that the simple formula, F=weight x distance does not offer the offset.
can I just use the hypotenuse to calculate force ?
Thanks!
Dave
