I totally agree. I design plastic articles and moulds for a living, and over the years have seen many people screwed, protected by patent or not. My advice is almost always "Be the firstest with the mostest". Use the money you would have spent on patents to streamline your production, make it cheap enough, and leave enough margin on it to cut the throat of the competition if they do enter the market. Even if your product is so jaw-dropping good, you will make enough money not to worry about competitors.
