So you are saying that if someone does something stupid, the variac is more dangerous. That could be a valid point.

Since we can assume that the person who wired the chassis did not follow
all the safety protocols, either a non-functioning safety ground on the
cord/plug/socket and a single metal chip or plain stupidity.
Or John Scheisskopf wires a variac and a load and grounds the common
terminal to the chassis The chassis is connected to the safety ground
via a three wire cord and plug. His house was built in the 1800s and
has been upgraded over the years by many people.
He wires it up in the corner of the basement shop he dedicated to
electrical stuff. Now he wants to move it to the corner of the shop
with his machines, he goes to plug it in and DARN!, there is only a 2
wire socket, so he plugs a cheater (3 to 2 wire adapter) into the socket
and secures it with the screw on the wallplate, just like the other plug
that is there. Too bad the wallplate is not grounded! Now he plugs it
into the socket and there is a 50:50 chance the chassis is hot! If he
is really unlucky, BOTH chassis will be hot and lots of expensive stuff
will fry.
