Since it's just the regular beam (4"x2") with the rails added, I'm guessing
the strength would be the same. The www.makerslide.com site lists the
numbers to calculate the strength. The www.buildlog.net site has this:

Originally they were using the Bishop Wisecarver stuff, but decided gluing
those to the beam or grinding flat plate was too hard, so making a custom
part was easier (more fun anyway). Each to their own I guess.

There's been no mention of patents, presumably it's "different enough" to
avoid conflict or maybe BW haven't noticed yet.
