I've done this while the ballscrews were out of my
Bridgeport mill.
While there WAS a lot of friction to start the table moving,
once it
started it glided like it was on an air bearing! I actually
had to grab
the table to prevent it from flying off the end!

I know the Y will bind if the table is extended off to one
side, but
it is also fairly easy to move when the table is centered.
