Re: G-Codes to Stepper Pulses?

I have been lurking for some time now but Kirk's
message has dragged me out of the woodwork.

I too have been considering writing a G-Code to
Stepper program as I am a programmer.
The problem is that what can of worms lies underneath
the surface of such software probably requires a CNC
guru first , programmer second.
There is no framework for such an application which is
generally available - tho there is motion control
theory aplenty.
I am after the hobbyists grail, a very low cost route
with top performance.
I need accuracy of about 7 microns from my mill -
(I've blown my budget on zero backlash ballscrews)

I've seen opinions on products like MAXnc which sound
like a bunch of utils which are a bit on the flaky
side and worth what you pay, others like CNC
Controller at $1000 are not even remotely disguised as
the grail.
What is the state of play with Stepster, I believe the
author passed away the readme that came with it
suggests that it was not finished as there are
outstanding problems.
I then saw a message on this list from another person
who had a similar named product - was it sold?

Maybe I should take the plunge and start rolling my
own or even help out with Kirk's project ;}

Any advice would be helpful.
