The closest I have seen to the holy grail is EMC.
You can have the full source code if you want to tweak it yourself, it is
usable right now for both steppers and servos, it supports a tremendous
range of g-codes, and the price is right. When I talked to Fred once he
mentioned he could use some programmers to help him move the project along.

Yes, it is a little nerdy getting Linux set up correctly and even worse to
get the real time extensions installed. But, there is not any of the
economical programs out there that give you all the features available with
EMC.
