Series I and Series II only refer to the size of the mill.
Series I mills have a travel of 17" on X, 11" on Y, 5" on
the quill and 16" on the knee. Series II machines have a
travel of 30" on X, 15" on Y, 5" on the quill and 16" on the
knee.
Your friends machine could very well have servos. Bridgeport
used steppers up to BOSS 6. BOSS 7 and up use servos. If his
X motor is running hot and going out, it is probably a servo
machine.
