Digital Caliper Output

Following up on my earlier posts about "Lengthening Digital Calipers"
and "Automated Manual CNC" -

What would be the easiest way to output from a digital caliper head?

Using SPC would limit me to 500 millisecond or so up updates and
maybe limit the range to less than 9.9995 inches . . .

What about tapping into the circuit to get a pulse - is there any
exposed circuitry or is it all on one embedded chip?

I also thought about taking the output to the display and reading it
to give an output . . .

Any Thoughts??
