They don't work that way. About 500 times a second, the chip selects
one digit
at a time and sends the 7 segment drive signals to it. Then, it does
the next
digit. Even if what you suggest was how it worked, you would have lost
direction of travel information.

Yes, you could pick up all the digits and de-multiplex them, and get
faster readout
than the spc port, but I'm not sure it is fast enough, still. But,
you'd get about
60-100 full updates/second.
