Sounds great but there is not an easy way to lengthen them. The rack
is precisely machined and you would have to buy multiple calipers to
salvage the racks out of them, surface grind the ends to be a perfect
match and then bolt all of them on to a suitable slide.

Besides this, the rack must be protected from even the smallest
chips, etc. A digital caliper is a little more robust.

If you could get the racks by themselves and cheaply, it would be
doable.

The "Shooting Star" DRO is what you are talking about. A long round
rack and a readhead that equates to a dial caliper with an encoder
mounted to it. $500+ for a 2 axis setup.
