STRICTLY IC magazine had an article about 2 years ago on an impulse
welder for joining the electrodes of model engine glow plugs. It was
essentially a capacitor bank, and the impulse was given mechanically- a
fixture held the base and the electrode, and when all was ready you
simply tipped the fixture up and a weight dropped down, driving the wire
into the work, and discharging the cap. It gave a nice consistent
mechanical force. The guy was making minature glow plugs.
