The Cap setup should work. If it were me I'd think about using 110 VAC as well
(do that safely!!).

Model railroaders frequently use resistance
soldering setups, you might consider one of them. You can make one of
those easily with a battery charger unit. Micromark sells the "American
Beauty" units (hi $$$), but you can make one yourself by looking at their ad.
The "tweezer" unit is pretty easy to make.
