This is called wrapped linear and you are correct that it looks just like
you were winding a measuring tape around a can. The second way of
defining a rotary axis is to reset to zero on each rotation. Both are
commonly used with rotary tables.

The folk at NIST chose to use wrapped linear when they wrote the EMC code
on which DeskNC is based.

BTW I think that the EMC code will work to more than 10 digits of
accuracy if you really did need it. If DeskNC works the same, I would
think that you would just have to auto or mdi to the real location that you
wanted and it should go to the step closest to that location even though
the display might not work to that resolution.
