The disproportionate scale results from never having seen one :)

Ron,

In some designs I have worked on, they space the bearings far apart but put
a spacer tube between the outer rings of the bearings. Most time they use a
single end counter bore, the retainer plate on the outside clamping both the
outside bearing and the inner via the tube. This of course is a much easier
part to machine than the double counter bored. I've posted it before but
there is quite a bit of this info on-line at <A
HREF="http://nookind.com/pdf/powertrac.pdf">Nook</A>. It's in PDF format but
it is very complete. They have many other files but it is difficult to find
on the site. Look at this page <A
HREF="http://nookind.com/download.cfm?section=powertrac">
http://nookind.com/download.cfm?section=powertrac</A>. It has pictures, cross
sections of the bearings and the housing used. Also, specs for typical
ballscrew ends are shown. Hope this helps.

I have the NSK and THK ballscrew catalogs also. These two have complete shop
drawings for almost all their ballscrews and paraphernalia. No need to
invent your own, just scale down for smaller machines etc. Try calling or
writing to them as e-mailing does not seem to get a serious response from
them.
